Spotlight on...Sandi Lyman, Online Communications Manager
First off tell me about how you got involved in the sexual health field and what brought you to Colorado Youth Matter…
I first got involved with sexual health in college when I realized how little sex ed my classmates had been given. I was shocked by their ignorance of how their own bodies worked. I joined my school’s women’s group and was trained as a sexual health educator, providing trainings such as “Sex in the Dark” with college students.
I joined the Colorado Youth Matter staff when The Healthy Colorado Youth Alliance became a part of CYM. I had been working with The Alliance since St. Patrick’s Day, 2010.
What 3-5 words would you use to describe your personality?
Jovial, Inquisitive, Caring
What is your favorite part of your job as the Online Communications Manager? What are some of the best ways that people can connect and stay in touch with Colorado Youth Matter online?
I love empowering people with information. Social media allows me to do this in real time in a way that is meaningful to people’s everyday lives and is hopefully immediately useful. I also love hearing back from the folks we work with and sharing the articles, factsheets and videos that they find helpful. We have a great community of support on Facebook and Twitter, but we’re always looking for more voices to add to the conversation! We’re also growing our Pinterest profile and would love more folks to connect with there.
You have been busy the last few months balancing school, working at Colorado Youth Matter, and being a new mom! What do you like to do in your free time to maintain some balance in your life?
Ha! Well, I am very fortunate to truly love my work and school (and obviously my family) so I often find myself diving even further into these areas when I have free time, searching for the latest articles or interesting images that will motivate people. Outside of that, my wife will be the first one to tell you how much I love baths! I also really enjoy cooking and find it to be almost meditative. In the past I’ve been a runner, so I’m hoping to get back to that.
What are some exciting new things Colorado Youth Matter has coming up in the next few months?
I’m excited that my family and I will be joining the fun for the Pumpkin Pie 5k/10k. I’m also excited for some of the memes we have planned for the end of the year. Make sure you follow us on Facebook and Twitter so you don’t miss it!
Thanksgiving is coming up soon, do you have a favorite Thanksgiving food that you like to make and/or eat?
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. My family will tell you that I often go overboard with the food I make. This year I’m hoping to make some gluten-free bread for my stuffing and also to make some smoky roasted sweet potatoes infused with lapsang souchong tea. I’m also thinking about making savory seared pumpkin steaks. My mouth is already watering…
What are you looking forward to most in the upcoming months, both professionally and personally?
I’m looking forward to my daughter’s first birthday at the beginning of 2014 as well as hopefully passing our 700th like on Facebook.
