Stephanie Mollborn, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Colorado, and researcher of pregnant and parenting teens issues was recently featured in the Colorado Arts & Sciences Magazine. Her research has pointed to how certain factors such as poverty and depression may increase a teenagers likelihood of becoming a teen parent. According to Mollborn, “When you’re talking about teen parents, you’re often talking about poverty.” In an article published in The Sociological Quarterly earlier this year, Mollborn found that teenagers in more impoverished communities experienced less embarrassment about the prospect of becoming pregnant and had higher rates of pregnancy. These differences in education and poverty levels may explain why teens from predominantly African American and Latino communities are less embarrassed at the prospect of pregnancy.
